DEAR ENGlaND - SOUND NO. 3

The Sound No. 3 will support the Head of Sound and Sound No. 2 alongside other technical departments, cast members, and creatives, to technically facilitate all Sound requirements on the Dear England UK Tour 2025-2026. Together with the rest of the company, the Sound No. 3 will uphold a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and will endeavour to create and maintain a working atmosphere, in rehearsal sessions and on tour, where all feel supported and empowered to deliver their best work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assist the Production Sound Engineer, Associate Sound Designer, Head of Sound and Sound No. 2 in tech and throughout performances, working closely with other technical crew and cast members.

  • To assist the Sound No. 2 with the management and preparation of radio mics, including running radio mic fittings, managing pre-show sound checks, and any other system testing on a daily basis.

  • To run an onstage Sound plot during performances, and to work with venue crew in their involvement with Sound backstage where necessary.

  • To deputise for Sound No. 2, including learning the No. 2 backstage plot, mic fittings, and assisting with any routine system and equipment maintenance work as required.

  • To provide technical support for any onstage rehearsals throughout the tour, as scheduled by the Company Manager and Stage Manager.

  • To support the administration of petty cash for Sound Department spends and obtaining VAT invoices where possible for any purchases.

  • To attend technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and preview notes sessions, to ensure awareness of the Sound requirements, and any resulting changes.

  • To keep accurate weekly timesheets and work collaboratively with the Head of Sound and Sound No. 2 in creating weekly departmental rotas.

  • To uphold the high production standards expected of a Sound No. 3 on a first-class play, and the high artistic quality required by the Co-Sound Designers and Associate Sound Designer.

  • To create and encourage a supportive and positive backstage environment for the cast and crew.

  • To be an active member of the company, working to support and assist staff in all departments and providing support and assistance throughout the run of performances on tour.

  • To comply with the various policies of the Producer and the venue on Safeguarding, Social Media, Equal Opportunities, Harassment, Sustainability, Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs and Health and Safety.

  • To support JAS Theatricals’ and National Theatre Productions’ commitment to making their productions accessible to all, and their commitment to provide assisted performance.

  • To carry out all other duties normally associated with the role of Sound No. 3 on a tour of a first-class play.

Person Specification

  • Extensive operational Sound experience and excellent technical skills including familiarity with video systems.

  • Previous large-scale touring experience essential.

  • Awareness of relevant Health & Safety legislation.

  • Flexible and self-motivated with the ability to work well with actors, and other theatre staff.

  • A calm and practical approach to technical troubleshooting.

  • Ability to lead and organise staff, with empathy and discretion.

  • Good communication and organisational skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
